This paper takes Masada as a model for illustrating the tension between science, politics and religion influencing archaeology in Israel today. It mainly presents studies of the Israeli sociologist Nachman Ben-Yehuda about the „Masada Myth“: The historical narrative of Josephus has been shaped and changed in the 20th century to form an influential myth of heroism in today’s Israel
